What our internships look like
Institutions across the United States and Sweden — museums, planetariums, and universities — use OpenSpace’s open-source codebase to build internship programs that give students real, hands-on experience with astrovisualization, scientific data, and software development. Interns are mentored day-to-day by staff at their host institution, with the OpenSpace team providing technical guidance and opportunities to share their work with the wider community.
High school programs
High school programs typically focus on a first introduction to coding and visual storytelling: creating guided space tours using OpenSpace’s scripting engine, learning coding fundamentals in Lua or Python, and developing content for planetarium shows or social media.
Undergraduate and graduate programs
College-level programs take on more technical, research-oriented work: writing or modifying code in C++ or Lua, integrating real scientific datasets such as exoplanet catalogs or mission data, building tutorials and documentation, and contributing assets back to the broader OpenSpace community.
